Songkran Thai New Year, Funny KatoBoonFamily Birthday. April is the month of Songkran, the Thai New Year in Thailand. It’s also the month Papa Bas Boon has his birthday, two rollercoaster weeks of parties in Isan Thailand. Funny Kato Boon loves birthday cakes. More fun when he can push Papa’s head into the cake.
The locals visit Buddhist temples, and now the temples are used to celebrate Songkran (pour water over Buddha statues and each other). Bas visits the old village of Mama Rak, wooden houses, and everybody is utterly drunk at 10 am. The Isan people do not notice much from travel restrictions and lockdowns; most have never left the village since birth. Few have a driving license, and most live on the land; their favorite food is a menu with papaya and fish named “sometam”.
Its like the KatoBoonFamily Birthday, everybody is celebrating the Thai New Year.
Life is easy. They take a stick and catch a mongo on some tree if you are hungry. Thai people eat about everything, insects, crabs, wasp, and eggs from ants. The list is endless. And the Thai people are at the forefront of celebrating everything. Indeed Buddha day, the New Year, which they name Song Kran (in April), the “falang” (foreigner) New Year, which is on the 1st of January. But Halloween and Christmas is also reason for celebration in Thailand.
Nothing has changed in the last decades in these villages, Esan style. The KatoBoonFamily is celebrating the “Life4Fame” style these two weeks; life is beautiful!
